The files we’re working with aren’t sensitive from a security standpoint and everything is backed up to time machine and Backblaze cloud backup service. SMB over internet would be even better but I believe that our isp does block that. Port 548 is open, I’ve tried using DMZ, our ISP (Bell Canada) says they don’t block port 548. I’ve tried every conceivable thing to get AFP over internet…. Moving files around with wetransfer type services creates too many duplicate files to keep track of. We’ve tried every cloud based drive and they all have flaky interfaces and require very large drives on the remote machines for their buffers, have problems with updating, or have issues with file names.
When we had AFP over internet we could create a new user on our server for each client, allowing them to log in, mount the server share on their desktop, upload or download, and open/work on/close and save directly to our server. WebDAV only allows one user to access one folder at a time, though.
WebDAV works and allows even very large files (graphics used in advertising and book printing)to be opened, worked on and saved remotely at the same speed as our LAN when we have gigabit fiber connections on both ends.
We haven’t been establish AFP over internet since 10.6.8.
